In a new interview, the Japanese studio has revealed more about their plans (while we’re also looking forward to their Nintendo Switch-exclusive Bayonetta 3, due at the end of October).
Atsushi Inaba, Hideki Kamiya, and a new hire, Takeo Yamane, spoke to Famitsu in Japan about the changes within the company (they’re so serious about it they’re calling it PlatinumGames Reborn) and their upcoming projects. These include Project GG, and Kamiya says the game has grown significantly since its initial announcement, thanks to ideas from other team members. Originally intended to be a simple action game, it has become much more since its announcement.
They will have similar core gameplay mechanics to Unite Morph, seen in The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta’s Witch Time. Kamiya added that the studio will not release more details about the game before 2023. Hence, until then, it’s anyone’s guess when or what year it will be released because Kamiya admitted that if necessary, he will delay the release of his game as much as needed to ensure a sufficiently high-quality launch.
PlatinumGames is also working on a new in-house IP. All we know about this is that it will be a large-scale project, and they will need more people for all future projects. The goal is to reach a thousand employees at some point. So let’s go back to Project GG: at the 2020 announcement, Inaba hinted that it was not far from launch: “Basically we’d like to hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and Steam, and then, of course, PlayStation 5 and Series X are coming soon. We don’t know exactly when this will come out, but we’d like to release it on whatever the main platforms at that time. Put it this way; we’re not looking at something as long as three years. Nor will it be as soon as half a year or a year. But as our first self-owned and self-published game, we want to deliver it as soon as possible.”
So we’ll have to wait for Kamiya’s next game, and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if it finally makes it to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC in late 2023.
