A new job posting from The Coalition and Microsoft hints at the development of Gears of War 6, citing a unique campaign experience.
As many of you may remember, the cliffhanger ending of Gears of War 5 almost guaranteed that the franchise would get another episode, but nothing has been officially announced yet. What’s more, rumours of a Gears 6 are severely limited. There are a few rumours that The Coalition is working on a new Gears game, as well as a new IP, but nothing really concrete. However, a new job posting may give credence to these rumours – at least for the new Gears title.
A job ad on Microsoft’s careers portal for The Coalition, apparently first spotted by Pure Xbox, is looking for an experienced lead mission designer.
The ad mentions that this position will work closely with the campaign director and map design team to focus on the overall “experience, pacing, rewards and features” of Gears of War 6. That there will be a campaign in Gears 6 is obviously no surprise, but its development is a nice bit of confirmation.
This September will mark 3 years since Gears 5 was released, so it’s about time for a new game. However, the listing gives us a clue that Gears 6 is still in the early stages. It could be a few years before release, and fans may not hear about it for a long time. Of course, it could come sooner, but generally speaking, early announcements don’t tend to go down well. After all, Gears 6 can’t be another Elder Scrolls 6 situation.
While the wait may be extended, the future looks bright for Xbox studios.
Game Pass is as strong as ever, and Gears of War 6 would likely debut on the service on launch day. Major games are coming to the service over the next 12 months, including Hollow Knight: Silksong and Starfield, and there are plenty of first-party games in development – Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2, Redfall, Fable, State of Decay 3 and many more to name a few.
Gears of War 6 isn’t officially listed among them, but with this job posting, it could be. It doesn’t matter how quickly The Coalition finishes – only that when it does come out, it holds its own against its predecessor or, ad absurdum, surpasses it.
