A recent social media post is making fan speculating that Horizon Forbidden West DLC may be in active development.
Nearly six months have passed since the launch of Horizon Forbidden West. Released earlier this year by Guerrilla Games and Sony, Horizon Forbidden West was a huge critical and financial success, but gamers also widely praised as a worthy successor to Horizon Zero Dawn. While the game has received some critical updates since its initial release, there has been no announcement of a significant DLC expansion.
However, there is some evidence that Horizon Forbidden West DLC may be in the pipeline. A social media post have led to speculation that motion capture work is being done for the Horizon Forbidden West DLC, although this has yet to be revealed. As spotted by GamesRadar, Peggy Vrijens, who assisted in Aloy’s motion capture work, posted a video on Instagram showing Aloy in a mocap dress. Vrijens then shared another post featuring Louis Van Beek. The two had previously worked together on Horizon Forbidden West. The two may be working on another project, however unlikely that seems.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Sony and Guerrilla Games wanted to capitalise on the popularity of Horizon Forbidden West with DLC. After all, that is precisely what they did with Horizon Zero Dawn and its Frozen Wilds DLC. Horizon Zero Dawn’s Frozen Wilds DLC was released about nine months after the original game, so it makes sense that if Horizon Forbidden West gets DLC, they could easily be targeting a year-end release.
If the Horizon Forbidden West DLC does indeed make an appearance, it will be interesting to see what it contains. The story developments in Horizon Zero Dawn’s Frozen Wilds expansion weren’t as consistent in understanding what happened in Forbidden West, so it’s possible that the DLC for the new game will be more of a side thread than anything else. In Horizon Zero Dawn Frozen Wilds, players could explore a brand new location and get a substantial new story thread to the main quest.
Rumours suggest that Sony is planning a showcase in September, where they will highlight their various projects in development, such as God of War Ragnarok and games geared towards a 2023 release. If this showcase materialises as rumoured, it would not be surprising to see the Horizon Forbidden West DLC, assuming it even exists. For now, fans of the franchise can only keep their fingers crossed that the news is trustworthy and will have to wait for an official announcement before they can get their hopes up.
Horizon Forbidden West has already been released for PS4 and PS5, and you can read a review of the game here.
