A “remake” of the 2006 Lovecraft adventure game Sherlock Holmes: The Awakening has been announced by the developer Frogwares of Ukraine.

Sherlock Holmes continues to be one of the most recognisable names in the world. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic British detective even has a long history of popular video games to his name. One such title is Frogwares’ 2006 adventure game Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened. Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is particularly interesting for its combination of detective story and Lovecraftian horror, and Frogwares agrees, having just announced that it will be remaking Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened.

“Rebuilding” is an odd term for the project rather than remastering or remake, but that’s exactly how Frogwares describes the project in its announcement press release. Frogwares is creating all-new code and assets for the new version of Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened. The new game will be built using Unreal Engine 4, and while Frogwares will obviously take some assets from Sherlock Holmes, it will be rebuilt from the ground up.

Nor will the new Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened be a 1:1 recreation of the original game. Frogwares has big plans for how it wants to improve and expand on the original title. The story of Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened will be rewritten with a younger Sherlock Holmes as the main character. Furthermore, the story surrounding the meeting between Holmes and Watson will be ‘amplified’. New side missions will be added, a new English voice-over will be added, the cut-scenes and animations will be reworked, and much more will be added to the game.

Along with all of this, Frogwares plans to keep the backbone of the original Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened intact during the redesign. The basic story of the original game, as well as the core mysteries and cases, will be the ones that Frogwares will keep and build the rest of the experience around. It’s effectively a new game, but it will also build on its predecessors.

The new Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened project will, however, need some help to get off the ground. Frogwares is planning to launch a Kickstarter project “to secure the final parts of production”.
