MOVIE NEWS – The author has received death threats after Rowling tweeted her support following the attack on Salman Rushdie.
According to Variety, when Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling took to Twitter to express her support for Salman Rushdie, she received some troubling responses. The mega-media conglomerate took a stand when one commenter threatened the author that “you’re next”. WBD issued the following:
“Warner Bros. Discovery strongly condemns the threats made against J.K. Rowling. We stand with her and all the authors, storytellers and creators who bravely express their creativity and opinions.”
“WBD believes in freedom of expression, peaceful discourse and supporting those who offer their views in the public arena. Our thoughts are with Sir Salman Rushdie and his family following the senseless act of violence in New York. The company strongly condemns any form of threat, violence or intimidation when opinions, beliefs and thoughts might differ.”
On Friday, August 12, Salman Rushdie was attacked by a man as the writer was giving a live lecture on stage in New York about how the United States is an excellent haven for writers and other artists. The attacker then jumped on stage and stabbed both the writer and the interviewer in front of the crowd. By the time the assailant was dragged off the stage, both victims had been injured; Rushdie suffered injuries to his neck and eyes, among others, and liver damage.
Rowling shared a link to the news on Twitter, expressing her pain at what had happened.
A Twitter user then replied, “Don’t worry, you’re next”, which caused the author to worry. Immediately on Twitter, she indicated that she would welcome any possible support.
Rowling then thanked users who had sent her messages of support and mentioned that the police were involved in the investigation.
Despite the precarious state of the wizarding world, Warner Bros. Discovery has been a strong supporter of J.K. Rowling in the past.
Time will tell if anything will come of this threat, but the authorities appear to have reacted swiftly to the incident.
Meanwhile, Rushdie’s son recently announced that the author is off the ventilator, able to speak and in good spirits despite his condition.
