MOVIE NEWS – Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland quits social media to preserve his mental health – he says he “spirals” when he reads things about himself.

 

 

Tom Holland is taking a break from social media for mental health reasons. The star of the MCU’s Spider-Man series and Uncharted is one of Instagram’s most followed personalities with 67.7 million followers but has rarely posted in recent months.

Holland revealed that he has been spending less and less time online for a while.

Now he just wanted to announce this to his fans properly and also highlight a charity called stem4, which promotes positive mental health for teenagers. Holland has asked fans to support stem4 and The Brothers Trust, a fundraising organisation set up by Holland’s parents to support several little-known charities like stem4.

“Hello and goodbye… I have been taking a break from social media for my mental health, but felt compelled to come on here to talk about Stem4. Stem4 is one of the many charities The Brothers Trust is extremely proud to support – and I’d like to take a moment to shine a light on their fantastic work.”

Tom Holland also said he would permanently delete Instagram and Twitter, calling them “overstimulating” and “overwhelming”.

“Hi guys. So I’ve been trying to make this video for about an hour now, and for someone that has spent that last 13, 14 years, however long I’ve been acting…I cannot seem to say what I need to say without ‘um-ing’ and ‘ah-ing’ every five minutes, so I’m gonna try again. I have taken a break from social media for my mental health, because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming, I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online, and ultimately, it’s very detrimental to my mental state, so I decided to take a step back and delete the app.”

Tom Holland isn’t the first celebrity to be put off by the harmful effects of social media, and he certainly won’t be the last. The 26-year-old actor has been the subject of several memes and campaigns, and it seems that all this publicity has taken its toll on his mental wellbeing. Selena Gomez, Kristen Steward, Pete Davidson, Millie Bobby Brown, Jennifer Lawrence and many other celebrities have left social media for similar reasons as Holland.

Hopefully, Tom Holland will find peace of mind during the break.
