Quentin Tarantino’s Films Will Be The Inspiration For The Yakuza Series Creator’s Next Game

The next game from Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi will be more like a Quentin Tarantino film – violent but with a touch of humour.

The Japanese developer told German publication 4Players what to expect in his next game, which will be his first since he split from SEGA last year. The game, which has not yet been officially announced, will be more like a Quentin Tarantino film, with violence as a gameplay element but plenty of humour. Something that’s just violent doesn’t really suit Nagoshi’s taste, as fans of the Yakuza series already know from Toshihiro Nagoshi’s statement to the portal 4Players:

Of course, I can’t tell you too much about our game yet, but I can tell you one big line: there will definitely be violence as a gameplay element, but I don’t want to go too much in the direction of thriller or even horror. I’d like my game to be more like a Quentin Tarantino film – so there might be some humour in it. Something that’s just intimidating or just bloody and brutal is not to my taste – I want human touches, some silliness and some seriousness, that’s what I’m in the mood for.

It looks like we won’t have to wait much longer to see the game in action, as Nagoshi is not one to hold back for long, which is also evident in his response to 4Players’ question about the first details of the game:

Toshihiro Nagoshi: I’ll be vague again. But here’s the thing: It soon pops out of me when I have an idea and I feel like doing it. I’m not the type of person who can hold on to something like that for a long time. So you probably won’t have to wait much longer….. Or rather: I think I’ll be going public with it much sooner than other developers would!

In the same interview, the creator of the Yakuza series also spoke about his split with SEGA after more than 30 years, saying he still wants to make games and sees better opportunities in starting his own company.

Toshihiro Nagoshi: „Especially in the last few years, I had reached the top management level of Sega. And I told the current owner, “Guys, I don’t want to be the CEO of Sega here.” I’m a gamer and a game maker, I want to push my career in that direction as well. Eventually, I came to the point that I saw better prospects for that if I started my own company and just didn’t stay with Sega. And at the same time, Sega can now develop someone into a future CEO. So I think the interests of both sides, Sega’s and mine, are best served. At the same time, this leads to a continued very friendly relationship with Sega, even after I quit there.”

One of the most recent projects between Toshihiro Nagoshi-led SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotokuo Studio was Lost Judgment, released for PlayStation and Xbox consoles last year. The game is an excellent sequel to the first Judgment. You can read a review of Lost Judgement here.
