Sony has announced the DualSense Edge controller with back buttons and customizable controls. A release date will be announced, “in the coming months”.
The DualSense Edge includes two new buttons on the back, two function buttons on the bottom, updated joysticks and trigger buttons, and a reinforced USB design.
The buttons on the back (LB and RB) provide additional functionality, allowing controls to be reassigned. The buttons are interchangeable between lever and semi-dome designs.
DualSense Edge’s new joysticks have interchangeable caps that can be switched between standard, high-dome and low-dome buttons. The entire joystick module is also interchangeable, so if one or both joysticks become damaged, they can be easily removed and replaced without having to replace the whole controller.
The user can adjust the sensitivity of the sticks as well as the dead zones. The preset controls can be used to create and switch between profiles, and access other functions such as game volume, chat balance and the control profile settings menu via the two Function buttons attached to the joysticks.
The trigger buttons at the top are also adjustable. The switches on the back allow you to change the path and dead zone values. Instead of having a long trigger travel for every game, you can have a long trip for a racing game and a short trip for a shooting game.
Sony has also improved the USB-C connector with a locking mechanism that snaps in and doesn’t pop out accidentally.
The other differences are aesthetic. The DualSense Edge has a black touchpad with PlayStation icons and a glossy black finish around the sticks. The front buttons also have a black background, as does the area around the rear buttons.
Apart from that, the DualSense Edge is essentially DualSense and includes all the DualSense features that exist, such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, a built-in microphone, motion control and more.
The DualSense Edge comes with a set of stick caps, a back button set, and a modified USB-C cable, bracket and spinner. There will also be a carrying case that can not only hold the controller and its accessories but also charge the controller via USB while inside.
Sony has not disclosed a price or even a release date for the DualSense Edge. The company will release more details in the coming months.
