The Chant is proving to be more than just a cosmic horror-action-adventure game: the latest trailer shows off the details of The Gloom and spirituality.
Developer Brass Token has released a gameplay trailer for its new horror game The Chant, including an expected release date. The brand new in-depth trailer focuses on the game’s island, The Gloom, which is a supernatural realm and unleashes dangerous creatures that act as arch-enemies, as well as the protagonist’s well-being influencing the gameplay in exciting ways.
Described as a third-person spiritual nightmare, The Chant follows Jess Briars as she seeks peace of mind after a traumatic past.
She goes to an island retreat that promises to help her on a spiritual healing path. But instead, she finds a horrific psychedelic world of cosmic dread when a group chant leads to the awakening of The Gloom. With no way to escape, he must uncover the history of the island cult and hopefully reverse the ritual.
Brass Token’s latest look into The Chant is the deepest dive into the game they’ve provided so far, and there’s plenty to dissect ahead of the game’s debut on November 3. Creative Director Mike Skupa gave narrated details on the gameplay and all the horrors that await players in this cosmic horror-action-adventure game.
Players will explore the island’s retreat camp and surrounding areas to find resources and collectibles to make weapons and defensive equipment.
A key point highlighted in the video was that the game’s difficulty comes from the player’s resource usage and the choices they make throughout the game. Players will aim to unravel the island’s mysterious, dark past by solving puzzles and creating items to aid the process.
The Chant also features an interesting game mechanic where players must nurture Jess’ mind, body and spirit. Skupa mentions that every action in the game “affects the balance” between all three, including common gameplay choices such as dialogue. Each decision affects how the player’s story ends. Also related to the game’s spiritually inverted nature is how The Gloom grows in the main world.
Supernatural aspects influence Jess’s negative energy by trying to amplify and feed off of it.
We can fight the various entities and sects of The Gloom by finding their weak points. We need to use weapons and traps that best strike them. To increase the horror, sometimes escape is the best option. As players learn more about how The Gloom works and its inhabitants, spiritual abilities become available as a means of attack.
So far, The Chant seems to draw inspiration from many well-known horror products. It’s a bit like Midsommar meets Lovecraft, which only adds to the creepiness of the mystery behind The Chant. Fans of the Resident Evil franchise may recognise some games’ elements in exploring the wooded island. The game also seems to raise the stakes with gameplay that affects the mental and spiritual well-being of the protagonist. We have seen this as a significant component in very few games so far. It will be interesting to see what else happens in this not-exactly-peaceful haven.
