An Image Shows the Difference Between the Graphics of the Original Silent Hill 2 and the New Remake

A Silent Hill fan has posted a screenshot comparing the visuals of Silent Hill 2 between the game’s original release and Bloober Team’s upcoming remake.

The Silent Hill 2 has posted a screenshot comparing the game’s original release graphics to footage from the trailer for Bloober Team’s upcoming remake. Some players have already shown their ideas of what to expect from the Unreal Engine 5-updated game, but its official trailer raised the bar for graphics even higher than many players imagined.

Initially released in 2001 by Konami’s Team Silent development team, the game is a sequel to the original Silent Hill and built on that game’s foundation to create one of the most iconic horror games ever. Returning to the eponymous town at the heart of the franchise’s story, the game sees a new protagonist explore the town of Silent Hill after receiving a mysterious letter from his dead wife. As James Sunderland explores the nightmarish town, he meets some of its mysterious inhabitants and confronts monsters born of his own grief and trauma. Silent Hill 2 was a critical and commercial success upon release, and the game’s menacing enemy, the Pyramid Head, became a pop culture icon.

Reddit user nesatzuke posted a comparison image in an r/Gaming thread showing the same scene from the original Silent Hill 2 and the upcoming remake. The astonishing difference in clarity between the two editions is immediately apparent, in the remake you can see a lush, far-reaching forest, while in the original edition you can only see a few low-lying trees. The drastically improved lighting and reflections seen in Bloober Team’s remake help create a palpable sense of dread in the scene, which is one of the reasons why many horror developers are using Unreal Engine 5 for their future projects.

The responses to the Reddit post were filled with gamers eager to play the Silent Hill 2 remake and sharing their love for the original title. While some players were curious about the remake, they also expressed uncertainty, referring to 2012’s Silent Hill HD Collection and the widely criticized changes made to the game’s graphics. Other commenters noted that they are new to the franchise and are excited to experience Silent Hill 2 for the first time.

While the original game’s fantastic art design means the game still looks great 21 years after its original release, under the hood of Unreal Engine 5, Bloober Team’s remake is sure to take the game’s trademark unsettling atmosphere to new, terrifying heights and the otherworldly monsters. With these terrifying new visuals, gamers might want to leave the lights on when the PC and PS5 exclusive Silent Hill 2 hits store shelves.
