We’re not going to play through Sony Santa Monica’s game and after a day or two to get the platinum trophy. No, it’s going to be much more challenging than that. It also applies to dodging spoilers (a topic we’ve already covered here about the game).
Previously, insider Tom Henderson had said that the 2018 God of War sequel would take 40 hours to play through, but since then, we’ve gotten different figures from the press that already plays the game, so we have a clearer picture of God of War: Ragnarök in terms of duration. According to IGN, it takes seventy hours to play through 100% of the game, not forty. For a JRPG, this length is standard, but it is an action-adventure genre game!
According to the IGN video, an average playthrough will take 40 hours, and that’s probably what Henderson’s source was referring to. Of that, five hours will be taken up by cutscenes, so it’s roughly 35 hours of gameplay for an average playthrough. To put that into context, playing through God of War 2018 (if you just kept your hands on the story) took around 20 hours, and the platinum trophy required up to 50 hours of Kratos and Atreus…
God of War: Ragnarök has five difficulty levels. Give Me a Story focuses on the story. Give Me Grace is new: it’s much easier than the third difficulty level, as enemies won’t attack as often. It also helps you manage multiple camera angles, so you don’t have to worry about being attacked from multiple sides. Give Me Balance will be the average difficulty level, Give Me No Mercy will be more challenging and Give Me God of War will be the hardest. On the harder levels, opponents will be more intelligent and pickier. You can ease out of the Give Me God of War level this time if it’s too hard, but you can’t go back to that difficulty level afterwards!
God of War: Ragnarok is coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on November 9.
