MOVIE NEWS – Scott M. Gimple has spoken about his and Danai Gurira’s collaboration on the Rick and Michonne spinoff series.
Former Walking Dead star Danai Gurira will soon return to the franchise as the star of one of several upcoming spinoffs. The Walking Dead is coming to an end with the conclusion of its eleventh and final season. But it looks like the universe will continue to expand for some time. Various spinoffs are currently in the works. One of them is a miniseries focusing on Michonne (Gurira) and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), the former lovers who separated in season nine.
The Walking Dead producer and writer Scott M. Gimple revealed in a new profile on Self about Gurira how heavily involved she is in the spinoff, which he says will be a “prestige miniseries”.
In addition to Gimple, she is also co-creating and writing the series. This will allow her to put her own creative stamp on how Michonne’s story ends. Gimple explained what the writing process was like with Gurira. He finds it satisfying how they challenge each other.
“She challenges me, I challenge her, and neither one of us lets the other off the hook,” he said. “In life, I’m more a character actor; Danai is a lead. When we’re working, when we’re pitching, when we’re just dealing with life stuff – it’s a good combo.”
He added: “[She’s] incredibly creatively ambitious.”
“[Danai] wants to do new, signature work – stuff that isn’t out there currently. She doesn’t want to settle in any way. It’s the best creative energy to be around.”
Will the Rick and Michonne spinoff be a love story?!
We previously reported that an untitled Rick and Michonne spinoff was planned for six episodes. This follows the original idea that the story would be developed as a feature film trilogy. We can assume that the miniseries will finally reunite the two lovers. Gurira had previously dropped the idea that it would be a love story of epic proportions.
“There’s a spinoff that is coming out that we’re in pre-production,” she said. “We’re having a great time. It’s a lot of work, though, a lot of work. Well, it’s an epic love story.”
“It’s a love story between Rick and Michonne, as we know that they were together and got separated. So this is that story, that journey between the two of them with a very raging world around them.”
A release date for the Rick and Michonne spinoff series has not yet been set. Meanwhile, more will be revealed about Daryl Dixon in a separate spinoff about the famous survivalist, and another limited series will follow Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). A further Fear, the Walking Dead series, is also in the works, and the Tales of the Walking Dead anthology series will feature standalone stories set in this world.
