The Sequel To Myst Gets A Remake! [VIDEO]

Riven, a puzzle-adventure game released in 1997, is getting a remake. The game is also known as the sequel to Myst…

Myst came out in 1993 and was designed by Rand and Robyn Miller, with Cyan as the studio behind it. And here’s the exciting thing: three decades later, Cyan still exists, and Rand Miller is still CEO of the company, which has confirmed in a Q&A on its website that it is making a modern remake of Riven from the ground-up.

It will not be a remaster. Riven’s space is entirely three-dimensional, so it’s not a point-and-click game like the original (also Myst) was. Cyan will talk about additional supported navigational methods later. (Hmm, are they thinking VR?) Riven has become one of the studio’s most acclaimed games, and they didn’t want to take a light or frivolous approach to remaking it. Cyan is still a small, independent studio today, and the team wanted to ensure they could do a difficult, expensive, complex job to a reasonable standard.

The Riven Remake differs from the Starry Expanse Project, although its team helped launch it. Cyan wrote about it here but cannot yet provide details about target platforms, release dates, and system requirements (after all, Myst was originally a computer game…). But forget that buying the original will get you the remake for free (we’re not kidding: that was one of the questions in the Q&A!) because this is not an update but a modern remake that requires significant resources on Cyan’s part. If you want more information, it’s worth subscribing to the Cyan Insider newsletter, which is usually the first place to get the news.

We don’t get much from the teaser video below, but it’s safe to say that this Unreal Engine-using remake is not what we expected. Especially not with the original studio behind the reimagined Riven. It will not be easy, and we can all agree on that.
