Alec Baldwin Sues Rust Crew to “Clear His Name”

CINEMA NEWS – Alec Baldwin sued the crew who set up the gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutcins on the set of Rust.

Due to the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, more than a year after the incident, legal battles are still ongoing against Alec Baldwin and the crew of Rozsda. Now, according to Variety , Baldwin wants to “clear his name” in the lawsuit against him and has launched his own cross-filing, blaming the incident on the person who delivered the cartridges to the production, as well as the three crew members who set up the gun.

Alec Baldwin has been under investigation since the shooting of Hutchins, in which another crew member was also injured. Baldwin always maintained that he was not responsible for the cameraman’s accidental death, as the props were all set up by others and he trusted those people to do their jobs properly to keep everything safe. In his lawsuit against them, he claims that the incident happened only because of their negligence and caused him “immeasurable grief” and “emotional, physical and financial hardship”. His lawyer wrote:

“Baldwin, more than anyone else on the set, was wrongly seen as the perpetrator of the tragedy. Through these cross-lawsuits, Baldwin seeks to clear his name and hold the cross-defendants accountable for their misconduct.”

Hutchins was shot on October 21, 2021, when Baldwin picked up the Colt.45 revolver during preparations for a scene, which the crew allegedly rigged with live ammunition. Baldwin allegedly pulled back the hammer and released it, causing the gun to fire and accidentally fire the live round into Hutchins and director Joel Souza, who was injured in the shoulder.

CINEMA NEWS - According to plans, the filming of Rust would be completed after the investigation into the death of Halyna Hutchins is fully concluded.

Is Alec Baldwin to blame for the Rust shooting?

Alec Baldwin was questioned by police several times after the incident, and the Santa Fe Country Sheriff’s Office only recently completed its investigation, and local prosecutors are currently considering whether to press charges against Baldwin and others. Baldwin’s new cross-appeal is related to a lawsuit brought against him and members of the cast by Rust screenwriter Mamie Mitchell, who said she was emotionally shaken by the incident, which she said left her “scared for her life.”

Baldwin had already tried to have that lawsuit dismissed on the grounds that the accident falls under New Mexico’s workers’ compensation system, but a judge denied the motion earlier this month, prompting the actor to file his cross-claim.

Last month, Baldwin paid tribute to Hutchins on the anniversary of her death, sharing a picture of her on her Instagram account with the simple caption: “One year today.” However, the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office issued a statement updating its position on whether charges will be filed against Baldwin or any Rust crew members in connection with the tragic but likely avoidable accident. In their statement, they concluded that investigators will “thoroughly review all evidence and make an informed decision about whether to charge those involved. No one is above the law and all victims deserve justice.”
