One gamer’s big discovery: the Nintendo Switch version of Tactics Ogre: Reborn has native keyboard and mouse controls, just like the PC version.
The Nintendo Switch and PC versions of Tactics Ogre: Reborn appear more similar than previously thought. Keyboard and mouse support on both platforms is just one of Square Enix’s many improvements to the updated remaster.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn is an enhanced remake of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, the remake of the original 90s tactical RPG for PlayStation Portable.
Square Enix has added new features and mechanics to the remaster. Such as bonus objectives, improved ally A.I., ally revival and training battles. In addition, several gameplay changes have been made to complete the tactical RPG experience. As one Tactics Ogre: Reborn player discovered, Square Enix is adding another control option for Switch players in addition to the usual Joy-Con and Pro Controller support.
Reddit user u/solwhitehorn went into the controller’s configuration menu. There they discovered that the Switch version of Tactics Ogre: Reborn supports a keyboard and mouse, just like the PC version. Keyboard shortcuts appear in the menu. The player can set two keys for an action. Many keyboard shortcuts in the game are left blank by default. But the player can connect a keyboard and mouse to change the shortcuts. The keyboard and mouse can be connected directly to the USB ports on the Switch dock. Meanwhile, the game runs in docked mode to activate the control option. According to U/solwhitehorn, a USB dongle, a wireless Dell keyboard, and a mouse combo worked as intended during Tactics Ogre: Reborn.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn is one of the few titles on the Switch that fully supports keyboard and mouse control.
The few select games that natively support the control setup on Switch are Fortnite, Quake, the original DOOM, and DOOM 2. Nintendo’s Game Builder Garage supports mouse controls. It’s designed to simplify the drag-and-drop process when creating programs.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn’s keyboard and mouse support are useful for gamers who prefer to control tactics and strategy-based games such as Civilization 6 and XCOM. It also promotes accessibility by allowing players to configure keyboard combinations to their liking. The Switch can sense devices via USB and Bluetooth, so more games may support the option in the future.
