TECH NEWS – The Sony engineers have come up with an elegant and extremely clever solution; hats off!
The Sony DualSense controller is famous for its poor battery life. Now it seems that the improved DualSense Edge is even worse. What is the company’s solution to this poor wireless battery life? Keep the controller plugged in. Seriously, that’s what they advised.
Sony told TechRadar Gaming that the DualSense Edge has slightly worse battery life than the original DualSense controller, thanks to the addition of new features.
“The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s operating time is moderately shorter than the original DualSense wireless controller because we’ve included many more features within the same form factor and ergonomic design as the original DualSense controller,” the company says.
Somewhat redundantly, Sony also pointed out in its announcement that keeping the controller plugged in preserves battery life:
“We wanted to strike a good balance between wireless operating time and delivering robust, high-performance features. Additionally, the longer USB braided cable is also great for competitive players who prefer playing with a wired connection to avoid wireless interference – this option preserves battery life.”
Let’s recap! The solution to poor battery life is to keep the DualSense Edge plugged in at all times.
According to TechRadar, the original DualSense lasted about 12 hours when new, but that’s deteriorated to more like six hours in a year as the battery wears out.
Sony doesn’t specify the battery life for the Edge. But the fact that it admits the Edge will be worse than the original device hardly bodes well.
Either way, while the DualSense Edge is PC-compatible, it doesn’t seem like a remotely attractive alternative to similar products in the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, which achieve 30-40 hours of battery life. Moreover, Sony’s new controller is $200 more expensive. Wow.
