The protagonist of Assassin’s Creed Red, set in Japan, has been revealed to be two separate individuals from different social classes of the time.
According to a recent report, Assassin’s Creed Red will reportedly feature a shinobi and a samurai protagonist. As many fans know, AC Red is an upcoming open-world RPG set in Japan, which will be released in 2024 or 2025, according to similar reports. Fans have been demanding a game set in Japan for quite some time.
According to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, two playable characters will be: a samurai and a shinobi.
The official teaser for Assassin’s Creed Red reportedly features the game’s female samurai protagonist, while the other character is said to be a shinobi and an African refugee who once joined the Brotherhood.
It is not revealed whether there is a choice between the two characters. Or whether the two characters are gender-bonded (this seems likely). Or are they both playable characters, like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s Jacob and Evie. There may be a choice, similar to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s Alexios and Kassandra.
If this character rumour is true, then shinobi and samurai are exciting choices. Generally speaking, samurai were warriors of the noble classes. Ninjas, on the other hand, were mainly from the lower classes. So it is perfectly understandable why a shinobi would flee to Japan. This could suggest that the samurai is affiliated with the Templar Order (or Order of the Ancients) despite being branded as Hidden Blade. In contrast, the shinobi is affiliated with the Brotherhood (or Hidden Ones). It could also be that these are separate factions operating alongside the well-established foundations of the franchise, but they could still be on the same side.
It’s unclear, but the choice of samurai and shinobi could make for interesting narrative elements, depending on their approach.
Of course, this one should be treated with caveats like all rumours about Assassin’s Creed Red. Very little is known about the game, as it is still a long way off. And in the coming months, it will presumably be all about Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
