TECH NEWS – Anyone wearing glasses may be unable to put the AR (augmented reality) headset, perhaps called Reality Pro, on themselves…
Apple already has experience charging extra for a situation it created. An excellent example is when the iPhone 7 no longer had the usual 3.5mm ear/headphone jack and instead had to pay for a 3.5-Lightning dongle. The US tech company may do the same with its AR headset. The New York Times has reported that it is impossible to use the headset, which is said to be expensive, with glasses. So anyone with such poor eyesight that their vision is severely limited when they take them off could be in trouble.
Therefore, Apple will try to sell prescription lenses so that users with limited vision can still use the headset. Pricing is not known from the site, but knowing the company’s strategy, it will certainly not be cheap (but this approach will certainly not work worldwide, so it may only be a viable option in the US, while glasses wearers elsewhere can go to hell, Apple may think).
As only 1 million headset units are said to be made this year, the number of lenses might be limited, and consequently, the fewer units produced, the higher the price will tend to be. For this reason, Apple may even switch to a solution whereby such lenses are only available on order, so the company would only have a minimal supply. And it might be on this accessory that it could make a profit, as we wrote the other day that the company doesn’t have high hopes for profits (but it does with the second model).
Custom chips power the headset, so the product, which runs on realityOS (rOS), could show strong performance graphically and computationally, streamlining it to run iOS apps. It could also have a knock-on effect on user feedback. However, eight Apple employees have expressed their concerns to The New York Times. They say the company is taking a different approach to its previous products because it is not designed to solve an existing problem.
The AR headset will have a carbon fiber frame, and the battery pack will be connected via cable. There will also be external camera sensors, two 4K displays, and a dial to adjust the video opacity on the device for communication and entertainment, which employees are skeptical about…
