MOVIE NEWS – The X-Files reboot from an unexpected director could open a promising new chapter for the Chris Carter sci-fi series.
The X-Files creator Chris Carter has dropped the bombshell that an exciting new director is bringing a revival of the franchise – Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.
The original sci-fi series, which ran for nine seasons on Fox from 1993-2002, followed the adventures of FBI detectives Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they investigate strange and surreal events.
Carter commented almost casually during the recent On the Coast With Gloria Macarenko. He revealed that a new X-Files instalment could be in the works for Coogler, who has made a name for himself in Hollywood directing blockbuster films such as the Black Panther franchise and Creed. “We’re so steeped in conspiracy theories now, y’know? The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think it’d be a different show,” Carter said. “Actually, I just spoke to a young man – Ryan Coogler – who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast, so he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”
This is exciting news for both fans of Coogler’s latest work and fans of the series. After all, the idea of a more diverse cast of FBI agents and sinister factions brings new life to an already popular franchise. Coogler, who has been nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the big screen, seems an excellent choice to lead a possible revival of the popular sci-fi series.
A revival of a proven franchise would undoubtedly prove popular on whichever channel it lands on.
That would probably mean Fox or FX, which has thrived with similar franchises such as American Horror Story, the latter now in its 11th season and with more to come. Not to mention a spinoff, the third season of which debuts this summer. It seems audiences are ready for long-form horror and sci-fi. And the original Mulder and Scully set the standard. X-Files fans are excited to hear more about this potential renewal.
