TECH NEWS – The tech company can’t deny that the slowing economy has forced them to downsize, as many others (Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft…) have done.
Apple has tried to keep the layoffs out of the equation, but try as the Cupertino company might, it can’t escape, so it has ended up reducing the number of employees working in its stores. Still, many of them will be able to find jobs elsewhere within Apple, so it may not be a question of firings exactly but of transfers instead. Bloomberg doesn’t have the exact numbers, but the site says it’s a relatively small number.
Of course, it doesn’t mean Apple won’t continue the layoffs later, so that it could be just the first phase. Those involved told Bloomberg that the changes and relocations are being made to improve the upkeep of the stores. They can move elsewhere within the company, but if employees are not interested in the options, they can be paid for up to four months, with the opportunity to take a job elsewhere. (Meanwhile, Hungarian unemployment benefits are only for three months, in a very human way.)
In March, we heard that Apple was not planning any layoffs and was putting other solutions in place: delaying paying bonuses, halting further staff expansions, and modifying and halting development plans. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, has cut his salary by 40% (not worth much) and said in his quarterly report that cuts were a last resort. It may have come about because Apple has not aggressively expanded its workforce.
If not tens of thousands of people are leaving Apple (we have had to report on it in the past with Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft…), at least in this respect, the company deserves praise, even if its products are not cheaply available.
