When concrete details like these are already being rumored, it’s worth wondering how much is known or how much Sony cannot keep its secrets…
Last week, we reported that Sony was reportedly preparing a handheld that would be less usable than its two predecessors, the PSP and PlayStation Vita, as it would not be able to be used as a standalone device and would be limited to a Remote Play platform. It raises the question, “Why bother?” and rightly so, but other handhelds on the market can only be used for cloud gaming.
Logitech’s G Cloud and the Abxylute have no built-in rendering capabilities, but the Q-Lite will be even more limited, being locked exclusively into the PlayStation 5 ecosystem. For example, it won’t support Nvidia’s GeForce Now (and Microsoft’s unavailability of Xbox Cloud Gaming via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is understandable). So it means that anyone who doesn’t have a PlayStation 5 shouldn’t buy Q-Lite unless it’s later hacked to be at least used for PC cloud services. (The PlayStation Vita’s homebrew scene did a decent job supporting the neglected handheld in the West.)
Tom Henderson said during Saturday’s Iron Lord podcast that he’d heard a November release date from his sources. At that time, Sony will launch more hardware, including the PlayStation 5 with the detachable Blu-ray drive, but there will also be new earbuds and headsets. Henderson doesn’t know how much Sony might charge for it, but he thinks Q-Lite should be billed as a PlayStation 5 accessory, not a handheld, and should cost Sony around $200, as it will be nothing more than a display appended to a DualSense controller.
All of it is unofficial. Since the DualSense Edge can be bought for $200, it might be justified since the “elite” controller is also much more expensive than the base console.
