MOVIE NEWS – Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is coming. presentation, so it is worth recalling why the original film was such a success 21 years ago, and why the second sequel can expect a similar reception even after so many years.

The first film was made with 5 million dollars and brought in 350 million, which is an amazing result for a production in which there are no big stars and no big studio behind it with a lot of money to invest. BNGL went down in cinema history as one of the most successful romantic comedies, even though it wasn’t intended to be. Nia Vardalos, the screenwriter-protagonist, wanted to make a darkly humorous film about the life of Greek immigrants after her one-man play about the same was a great success. The movie version was made possible because Tom Hanks and his Greek-born wife, Rita Wilson, fell in love with the play and became producers of the film.

In the most successful traditional romantic comedies, such as those made successful by Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts in recent decades, two loving hearts find each other after overcoming many real or fictional conflicts and misunderstandings. In BNGL, on the other hand, the close-knit Greek family, who love each other almost suffocatingly, is at least as much the main character as the lovers, their struggle with each other and with the world is at the center just like the waitress (Nia Vardalos ) and the decent teacher (John Corbett) meeting each other. Thanks to this, it is not the relationship between the heroine and her future partner that undergoes a dramatic change, but rather the emotional and power dynamics within the family.

With this change in dramaturgy, BNGL has brought a fresh breath to the attractively composed, but already in need of renewal, sets of romantic comedies. It will soon become clear what new features the third part, which is already about the emotional journey of the next generation, can provide.
