MOVIE NEWS – Series director Chad Stahelski doubts a fifth installment will be made, despite pressure from Lionsgate to continue. WARNING: John Wick: Part 4 SPOILERS INCOMING!
Previously, Chad Stahelski has expressed an openness to making another episode, but now it looks like John Wick 5 may not be happening after all. The biggest story in the Keanu Reeves-starring series was seen in John Wick: Part 4, in which the protagonist found his way to freedom from the High Table during a high-stakes duel with the Marquis de Gramont. Although he succeeded in defeating Bill Skarsgård’s character, the film ends with Reeves’ eponymous assassin dying and being buried next to his wife.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Stahelski was asked again about the chances of John Wick 5. The director has previously stated that he would like a break before a possible sequel, but it seems that he has now finally decided against a fifth instalment, as he feels that he and Reeves have “locked down” the story. Stahelski explained:
“The real question is not asking yourself, ‘Do I want to do it?’ Yes, I wouldn’t mind doing it. We gave it our all in John Wick 4, and we feel like we’ve come full circle. We feel like we’re done. So we feel like, ‘You know, it was a good way to wrap up the previous three films and the fourth one and give us something satisfying and fun.’ Right now, if you’re going to hold a gun to my head, I’d rather you shoot me. It would be very easy to repeat. The trick is how to repeat things with individuality. How do you bring your own style or influence to what has obviously been done three times before?”
John Wick 5 was first mooted alongside the announcement of John Wick: Part 4, with the sequels originally planned to be shot back-to-back, but plans changed due to pandemic and Reeves’ resurrection of The Matrix. Stahelski later told Screen Rant that the plan was also shelved because he and the crew were unsure how to make sequels without compromising quality.
Interestingly, Stahelski seemed more open to the possibility of a John Wick 5 after the fourth installment was unveiled, stating that he and Reeves would never say “the end” to the series. Reeves separately confirmed this sentiment, saying that one should never say “never”, but added that he would only return for another film if Stahelski directed it and if the story made sense.
Although audiences want the series to continue, the question of whether John Wick 5 will be made became a divisive one after the emotional conclusion of Part 4. Considering that Wick made peace with his death at the end of the film, it is understandable that some people do not want him to return, although with the backstory and the upcoming Ballerina film, others are still hopeful that Reeves will saddle up again for another adventure.
