The Movie Critic: Quentin Tarantino Finally Reveals What He Wants (Or Doesn’t Want) In His Last Movie!

MOVIE NEWS – Quentin Tarantino has revealed new details about his tenth and final film, The Movie Critic, including its unexpected subject matter, location and cast.

Quentin Tarantino reveals exciting new details about The Movie Critic. The auteur director has written and directed nine feature films in his illustrious career. Most recently, Once Upon a Hollywood. Now, after his tenth film, he plans to retire from directing. The title of Tarantino’s tenth and final film was announced last March. Since it is set in 1977, it was initially assumed that it would be about the legendary critic Pauline Kael. However, Tarantino has refuted this theory in The Movie Critic, saying that the film is instead based on a real-life but unknown male critic.

Everything Tarantino revealed about The Movie Critic

In a new interview with Deadline, Tarantino has revealed more about the film. The writer-director reiterated that it would not be about Kael. It is based on a man who wrote for an unnamed pornographic magazine in California in 1977. One of Tarantino’s first teenage job was loading magazines into a vending machine. He discovered that one of them “had a very interesting film page”. Below is what Tarantino shared about the subject of his film:

“[The Movie Critic] is based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag. All the other stuff was too skanky to read but then there was this porno rag that had a really interesting movie page. He wrote about mainstream movies and he was the second-string critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was as cynical as hell. His reviews were a cross between early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle might be if he were a film critic. Think about Travis’s diary entries.”

“But the porno rag critic was very, very funny. He was very rude, you know. He cursed. He used racial slurs. But his shit was really funny. He was as rude as hell. He wrote like he was 55 but he was only in his early to mid-30s. He died in his late thirties. It wasn’t clear for a while but now I’ve done some more research and I think it was it was complications due to alcoholism.”

Tarantino did not reveal the name of the unknown critic or the porn magazine he was writing for, but in The Movie Critic, the fictional magazine will be called “The Popstar Pages”.

It sounds like the film could be pretty racy. Given that the critic died of complications from alcoholism in his late thirties, this could also add a tragic tone to Tarantino’s tenth and final film. Not much is known about the actual story, although Tarantino has revealed that it will not be a revenge story. The filmmaker is breaking with an old tradition for the first time since 1997’s Jackie Brown.

British actors excluded

The film critic does not yet have a cast. Tarantino has admitted that some of his frequent collaborators, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are too old to play lead roles at around 35. Instead, he plans to cast a new leading man he has never worked with. He already has someone in mind who he thinks would do a great job, but he hasn’t decided yet. But Tarantino has ruled out a British actor for the role.

Asked if he would consider casting a British actor, the director said:

“No. The truth of the matter is, yes, obviously, a Brit could pull it off, but I don’t want to cast a Brit. Nothing against the Brits, but we’re living in a really weird time now. I think when people look back on this era of cinema and it’s just all these British actors pretending to be Americans and all these Australian actors pretending to be Americans, it’s like phantoms. Nobody is acting in their own voice.”

“We just happen to be in an era of really, really good British actors who for the most part can pull it off.”

“By the way, I’m not being xenophobic. The Brits would have a hell of a lot more problems if a bunch of American actors came over there with their Dick Van Dyke [Mary Poppins] accents playing famous Brits. They don’t want to see that s–t.”

Tarantino, who lives primarily in Tel Aviv, plans to move to Los Angeles in June. That could help “pre-produce” The Movie Critic. The latter includes continuing the search for actors. This coincides with the first news that he plans to shoot the film next autumn. As it looks like this will be Tarantino’s last film, plenty of talented actors will be lining up to work with the inimitable auteur for the last time.
