In addition to showing off Mortal Kombat 1’s gameplay and “Kameo Fighter” system, NetherRealm also confirmed a group of new characters at Summer Game Fest.
As we suspected, Mortal Kombat 1 drew us in to Summer Game Fest with its first look at gameplay. It also confirmed a handful of new characters to the roster. As many of you know, Mortal Kombat 1 takes place in a new universe created by the fire god Liu Kang. It seemed strangely peaceful before some new war arrived on its doorstep. For example, the long-standing rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero appears to have been settled.
In the new trailer, fans can glimpse the various gameplay systems in Mortal Kombat 1, including deaths, the Kameo Fighter system and much more.
Following the trailer, host Geoff Keighley welcomed Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon to the stage to provide further insight and information. When asked about the new Kameo Fighter system, Boon revealed that players would be able to choose a Kameo Fighter from a secondary list after their primary choice. This second character gives the player access to a classic fighter move set. So they can combine the abilities of two different Kombatants.
Boon went on to say that players can summon Mortal Kombat’s Kameo Fighters with the press of a button. If the player presses a button in a specific direction while summoning their Kameo partner, they will perform another attack. Boon says players will be able to perform combos with their main fighter. However, players will only be able to do this several times. This is because a meter limits how often Kameo Fighters can be called out.
Finally, Boon revealed that some Kameo Fighter options would overlap with the game’s main roster.
As expected, the combat is as brutal as in any previous game. There’s plenty of blood, bones are broken, and crazy abilities are on display.
