MOVIE NEWS – Michael Shannon, who previously played General Zod in Man of Steel, returns in The Flash, but he is not happy with the experience.
Michael Shannon, who played General Zod in Man of Steel, said that returning to the role in The Flash was not satisfying for him. Shannon previously claimed that he was “a little confused” when he first received the offer to return as General Zod. Shannon’s reaction is understandable, since Superman breaks General Zod’s neck in Man of Steel. But in these multiverse movies, any character can return.
The Flash is based on the Flashpoint comic where Barry Allen uses his super speed to travel back in time and save his mother. This results in an alternate time plane where everything is different. In the trailers, fans see a second Barry Allen played by Ezra Miller, Ben Affleck returning as Batman, and Michael Keaton returning as the alternate-time Batman. Sasha Calle plays Supergirl and General Zod doesn’t have a broken neck.
In an interview with Collider, Shannon talked about what it was like to return as General Zod after 10 years. “Yeah. I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t really satisfying for me as an actor,” he said. “These multiverse movies are like someone playing with action figures. It’s like, ‘Here’s this person. Here’s that person. And they’re fighting!'” Shannon said he preferred what Zack Snyder did with the character in Man of in Steel. “It’s not really the deep character study that I honestly felt Man of Steel was.” Shannon didn’t like the studio’s handling of Snyder’s and DC’s films.
With the Spider-Man universe movies, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Spider-Man: No Home Road, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Madness, and now The Flash, these multiverse blockbuster movies have become fashionable. Viewers like it when their favorite characters return or when a certain actor makes a cameo that means more outside the movie than in it. However, sometimes it feels like “playing with action figures”, which is fun but doesn’t always have a lot of depth.
Despite not being happy with his portrayal of Zod in The Flash, Shannon said he was excited to see Miller portray him in The Flash. Shannon also said that Miller has to do some pretty crazy stuff in this movie. Shannon is probably referring to Miller playing two characters on The Flash. Some fans are speculating that one of the characters could be the Reverse Flash, but fans won’t have to wait too long.
The Flash will be in cinemas on June 16, 2023, we have already seen it, you can read the review here.
