MOVIE NEWS – Kraven the Hunter joins Venom and Morbius in Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff universe.
The next film in Sony’s Venom/Spider-Man spinoff universe, Kraven the Hunter, has finally received a trailer. For the first time, we get to see Bullet Train and Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Marvel villain/antihero Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven. According to a trailer released by Sony Pictures Releasing as part of the CinemaCon event, the film continues the studio’s Spider-Man universe of antiheroes and villains.
Directed by J.C. Chandor from a script by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk, Kraven the Hunter tells the origin story of the Marvel character.
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964’s The Amazing Spider-Man #15, Sergei Kravinoff grew up in Russia during the Russian Revolution. He later ended up in Kenya, where he became attracted to hunting. After Kraven is given a mysterious herbal potion that increases his strength, speed and senses, he grows bored of hunting big game. He becomes obsessed with chasing Spider-Man. His dream is to be the one to catch the friendly neighbourhood wall-crawler.
Just like Venom and Morbius before him, Kraven will undergo some changes when he transitions to the big screen. The character’s origins will apparently differ from those seen in the comics, somewhat heroizing the character. The film places the comic book character in the role of antihero rather than the supervillain he is usually portrayed as. Many have expressed concern about this change. Fans are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with Sony’s decision to rehabilitate the villains of the Spider-Man universe.
The title character Kraven the Hunter, will be played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) will join the Tenet star as Calypso in Sony’s outing. Fred Hechinger (Pale Blue Eyes) will play Dmitri Smerdyakov, aka Chameleon. Christopher Abbott, Alessandro Nivola, Levi Miller and Oscar-winner Russell Crowe also appear.
How authentic is the film costume of Kraven the Hunter?
As in most superhero films, Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven in The Hunter will see the actor don various outfits. Sergei Kravinoff will probably only wear his iconic comic book costume at the film’s end. Continuing the trope of many superhero projects where the main character only gets his comic book costume in the film’s or TV series’ final scene.
The Kraven The Hunter movie trailer promises an action-packed adventure for the character played by Taylor-Johnson. While the character will be wearing his comic book costume at the end of the film, two other versions of the character will appear throughout the film. The first is a simple brown tactical vest that allows the character to hunt more freely.
This suit, as far as we have seen so far, gives the live-action version of Kraven a realistic look, unlike the often exaggerated comic book costumes.
There’s also a lighter version of the fur coat, similar in style to Kraven’s iconic dress. This version of the costume is an exciting contrast to the character’s fully comic book costume. The latter is shown in the film’s poster. Although Taylor-Johnson wears Kraven’s distinctive look on the poster, faithfully bringing it to life, the costume in the movie can seem somewhat over the top. It is probably more suited to the comic book setting. Still, if the film handles the outfit as well as the poster, it should really excite fans of the protagonist. True, some are already questioning some of the costume designers’ choices…
The film is scheduled to be released in the US on October 6, 2023. You can see the official poster below.
