MOVIE NEWS – James Gunn says that despite recent Superman news, Batman’s debut in the DCU may not happen as soon as fans would like…
Batman casting news fans are hoping for, as James Gunn has found his Superman. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait longer to find out who will don the pointy-eared headgear.
Fans have been speculating on who will take over the role of Batman and Superman in Gunn’s DCU since it was announced that Gunn would be taking over DC Studios and rebooting the canon.
Speculation has started specifically about Batman. Especially after it was announced that Gunn would be portraying him in The Brave and the Bold. This hints at the comic books he will draw inspiration from. Since those stories use a slightly older Batman, fans speculate that while a new face is possible, an actor who previously played Batman could return in Gunn’s film.
After months of keeping casting rumours quiet, Gunn confirmed on Instagram that David Corenswet had been cast as Clark Kent/Superman in Superman: Legacy. While his post focused on the Superman casting choice, he did reveal a bit more in the comments. User dabroni57 commented, “How close are we to casting Batman?” In response, Gunn said, “Miles and miles”.
This answer is not exactly satisfying to concerned fans. But it’s similar to the way Gunn has handled casting issues in the past. When talking about the casting process for Superman, Gunn was adamant that the process wouldn’t even begin until the script for the film was finished. In addition, Gunn also made it clear that although he had actors in mind throughout the casting process, he would not address rumours about who would and would not be in the film until official decisions were made.
Batman fans have a long wait ahead of them. After all, there are still “miles and miles” to go before casting. No production start date or release date has been announced. But fans know that the film will be part of the first cinematic phase of the DCU. It’s called Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. It will be directed by The Flash’s Andy Muschietti.
As in the comics on which it is based, The Brave and the Bold will see an older Batman teaming up with Damian Wayne, the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, whose existence Bruce Wayne was unaware of for the first ten years of Damian’s life.
The fact that The Brave and the Bold is still part of the first wave of DC movies means that the news should come sooner rather than later.
