It’s interesting if it is indeed the direction Asobo Studio is going in, but since A Plague Tale: Innocence, the first part, won many awards, and the second act, subtitled Requiem, wasn’t bad, it’s somewhat understandable why they want to make a trilogy…
Several job advertisements have appeared on the Asobo Studio website, and LinkedIn. Many of them are for Microsoft Flight Simulator (yes, it’s the same studio!), but some of them are for the Plague team. Positions relevant to us are visual effects (VFX) artist, senior game designer, senior artificial intelligence programmer, and senior gameplay animator.
The senior game designer job posting mentions that the successful candidate will be required to strengthen the team behind A Plague Tale: Requiem as it is in its pre-production phase of development, and it would be a plus to have played either of the two games, possibly with knowledge of narrative-based adventures. Last November, Asobo Studio had a similar job offer. A Plague Tale: Requiem has already been released, so it no longer has a pre-production process. It can only be a new game, which is surprising because, in the meantime, Asobo is putting a lot more emphasis on Microsoft Flight Simulator (and they’re looking for more people to work on it).
The studio hasn’t openly said a third episode is in the works. Still, director Kevin Choteau said shortly before the release of A Plague Tale: Requiem that although the story is over with this game, they won’t be closing the door as they are waiting for player feedback. With an average score of 84 on OpenCritic (on a scale of 1-100), the press received the game well when released in October, reaching 1 million players in two weeks, helped by its presence on Xbox Game Pass.
If a third A Plague Tale is in the works, we’ll have to wait another 2-3 years for that, and at the end of Requiem’s credits, we ran across a scene suggesting that it could be set in another period or even during the present day. We’ll see what the studio finally comes up with; until then, we can only wait and see.
