Star Wars Outlaws: How Does The Map Size Compare To The Latest Assassin’s Creed Games?

Ubisoft’s upcoming Star Wars Outlaws open world is being compared to one of the greatest Assassin’s Creed games, Odyssey.

The first open-world Star Wars adventure, Star Wars Outlaws, was recently compared to the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Star Wars Outlaws follows the story of Kay Vess, a rogue who goes rogue across the galaxy as the Empire Strikes Back, and the events of Return of the Jedi pit her against several of Star Wars’ most notorious crime families.

At the heart of the fighting will be a third-person blaster battle. Kay’s furry sidekick Nix will help distract or attack the enemy. Space combat will also feature heavily in Outlaws. The gameplay trailer shows an almost seamless transition from the planet’s surface to space.

There will be a lot more in the game. For example, a Grand Theft Auto-inspired cruise system and speeder bike chase. Fans are also curious to see what shape, texture and size the game’s open world will have. IGN pointed to an Edge Magazine interview in which Outlaws creative director Julian Gerighty explained that Kay Vess’ journey would not span across procedurally generated planets. Each planet will have a large open area to explore. Gerighty likened the extent of each planet to the size of two regions or “zones” in the vast world of Ancient Greece in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which contains seven regions in total.

“It’s a crude analogy, but the size of one planet might be [equivalent to] two of the zones in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey…It could be two to three zones. But it’s not this sort of epic ‘the whole of England recreated’ approach.”- Julian Gerighty, creative director of Star Wars Outlaws via IGN.

The creative director of Star Wars Outlaws made the latter comment in reference to Ubisoft’s notoriously great Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The latter basically recreated the entire landmass of England. The open world of Valhalla has received some criticism from fans. It was too big for an Assassin’s Creed title. Gerighty assured fans that the open areas of each planet in Outlaws would not be nearly as large as the open world of Valhalla. The number of planets in Outlaws is not yet known. However, all of the game’s regions combined may be even larger than Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Valhalla.

Since the unveiling of Star Wars Outlaws, the first-ever open-world Star Wars game has been compared to Bethesda’s upcoming 1,000-planet Starfield. But Starfield has been confirmed to use some sort of procedural generation to achieve such a colossal feat. It seems that Gerighty is claiming that the open-world structure of Outlaws does not have the same goal of creating entire planets, systems or galaxies, thus forgoing the use of procedural generation.
