MOVIE NEWS – After a shocking decision by Barbie, portrayed by Margot Robbie, at the end of the Barbie movie, Barbie 2 is poised to be nothing like the film directed by Greta Gerwig.

 

Barbie’s choice to become human opens up new opportunities for the sequel, as she gets to experience human life for the first time, offering amusing anecdotes about food and other human experiences. Margot Robbie’s return in Barbie 2 isn’t affected by Barbie’s transformation, and she could still play a significant role in the movie, either as a lead or supporting actress. The sets of Barbieland need to remain present in Barbie 2, as it makes the world-building more authentic, and could be put in danger due to external factors, providing a new story for the Barbies to save their utopia.

Barbie 2 will not be as fans expect after the shocking decision by Barbie, portrayed by Margot Robbie, at the end of the film. Once Barbie journeys into the Real World, she gets a taste of the flaws and complexities of human life, which clash with the utopia of Barbieland. The perfect paradise theoretically solved the problem of female roles by offering Barbies to inspire women to success, but in the Real World, they suffer from low self-esteem, anxiety, and fear while men enjoy power and privileged positions.

After meeting real women like Gloria (America Ferrera), and sharing a meaningful moment with the inventor of Barbie, Ruth Handler, Barbie starts to realize that her place might be in the Real World, where imperfection is allowed despite the chaos. She decides she wants to become human, and experience the full spectrum of emotions, which alters the trajectory of a possible Barbie sequel. Barbie 2 could tell a completely different story with Robbie’s Barbie, now that she’s no longer a doll.

 

Barbie becoming human changes what Barbie 2 could be about.

 

As Barbie has become human, she’s the same fish out of water that characterized Barbie, but with the added benefit of highlighting that she is experiencing human life for the first time. At the end of Barbie, she goes to the gynecologist for the first time, but she could have plenty of other human experiences. There are many foods that Barbie could never have tasted living in Barbieland, which would provide many amusing anecdotes for a Barbie sequel.

When Ruth gave Barbie the chance to become human, she held her hand and showed her everything she could expect from a flesh-and-blood life. This included such happy occasions as weddings and births, as well as funerals and diseases. She wanted Barbie to know exactly what she was getting with her choice, so Barbie 2 might be less of a satire and more of a thoughtful exploration of what it means to be human from the perspective of a doll who is understanding this for the first time.

Could Margot Robbie still return in Barbie 2?

Barbie’s decision to become human doesn’t affect whether Margot Robbie can return in Barbie 2, unless she decides she doesn’t want to. Robbie’s stereotypical portrayal of Barbie is key for the character, but if she doesn’t want to be the star of the film, she could be given a supporting role or even a cameo at any time. It’s possible that Robbie simply wants to pass the franchise onto a new actress, and every new Barbie sequel would focus on the adventures of different Barbie characters, either in the Real World or in Barbieland.

Robbie hasn’t shied away from franchises or sequels that touch on beloved IPS characters, and has made multiple films from Batman with Harley Quinn. She holds Barbie in high regard and has been protecting the character since she first joined the film in 2018. She’s heavily involved in the creative process, so even if she doesn’t appear in future sequels, her influence will still be felt throughout.

 

How Barbieland can still be in Barbie 2

 

A lot of time and effort went into making Barbieland, and there’s no reason to discard the hard work of the visual effects team because of a Barbie sequel. The set design really aids the development of world-building, and we feel Barbie’s environment to be just as authentic as anyone else’s in the Real World. There’s always the chance that rather than something threatening Barbie’s functioning, something in the Real World is threatening Barbieland, which would force the Barbies to find a way to save it.

Since Barbieland is responsible for making girls and boys in the Real World feel empowered to be whatever they want to be, there’s no reason for it not to feature in Barbie 2, even if it’s only a superficial element. Furthermore, while Barbie’s friends might visit her in the Real World, Barbie could get homesick and want to see everyone in Barbieland. It’s too interesting a fantasy space not to feature if a live-action Barbie franchise is ever made.
