Major Twist in Grand Theft Auto 6?! The Game Could Break a Long-held Rockstar Tradition!

Definitive information about Grand Theft Auto 6 is still officially unavailable, but reliable rumors and leaked information suggest a significant change within Rockstar’s game.

Rockstar Games has mainly gained fame with its single-player games. It has dabbled in cooperative games several times, but no one would think of Rockstar games as traditional co-op games. However, it seems that Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature two main characters inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, necessitating the main story to be supplemented with traditional co-op missions. If this becomes a reality, GTA 6’s co-op mode will need to be much more substantial and complex than the company’s previous attempts, with gameplay and storytelling having to make sense for both characters. If successful, Rockstar could break away from its single-player legacy and carve a new path in the co-op world.

While GTA Online has been a huge success, Rockstar has long been known for its high-quality single-player adventures. The company has dealt with other types of games, such as Midnight Club, but because of its reputation for quality, most fans would mention titles like Red Dead, Grand Theft Auto, Bully, or perhaps even L.A. Noire when they hear the company’s name. However, none of these popular titles have experimented with traditional co-op modes in story modes, but Grand Theft Auto 6 could change this.

Of course, this does not include online modes such as GTA Online and Red Dead Online, and it does not mean that Rockstar has never dealt with co-op games. For example, in Bully, players could play mini-games with others, but they were not present in the story part. In San Andreas, players could play in co-op mode, but the second player was practically insignificant. The Warriors game had a co-op mode, while in Max Payne 3 there were rumors of almost having such a mode. All of this shows that Rockstar hasn’t really left its mark in traditional co-op games. Instead, the company became known for its innovations achieved in single-player games, but Grand Theft Auto 6 could change this legacy quite a bit, and Rockstar could reshape the co-op genre.

It’s worth noting that there are many rumors about Grand Theft Auto 6, many of which are baseless. However, Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg employee, has reported several times on the size and extent of the game, even hinting that the main story is inspired by the Bonnie and Clyde robber duo. Many interpreted this to mean that Grand Theft Auto 6 will have two main characters, a man and a woman, which the notorious GTA 6 early gameplay leaks also support. Several details have emerged suggesting that the female protagonist will be a Latin woman named Lucia, and the male character is called Jason.

It is noteworthy that Grand Theft Auto 6 seems to have two main characters. Bonnie and Clyde were partners in crime, and assuming this inspiration holds, it would be logical for players to rob banks, commit crimes, etc. with both characters at the same time. There are AI-controlled companions in many single-player games, such as Kratos and Atreus, or Joel and Ellie, but there is a clear hierarchy in these games. If there really are Bonnie and Clyde-like protagonists in GTA 6, this hierarchy cannot exist. Instead, players are likely to be able to switch freely between the two characters. Otherwise, there would be no significant difference between the two protagonists of GTA 6 and the three protagonists of GTA 5, considering the differences and unique stories between the latter’s characters.
