Is The Apple Vision Pro Doomed Without External Apps?

TECH NEWS – Apple’s AR headset needs external, third-party development because the Cupertino-based tech company can’t do it alone.

The Apple Vision Pro is scheduled to be released in early 2024, but there are already worrying rumors about the technically sophisticated but comparatively expensive augmented reality headset. It could be disadvantaged in one particular factor, which would be crucial to its success! It’s about external developers and their work: a console must be successful with the manufacturer’s games (first-party, in-house titles) and external support.

And the Apple Vision Pro could be lagging, which is far from being in the same situation as the iPhone and the iPad. With these two devices, developers jumped at the opportunity, creating millions of apps. However, in his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman wrote for Bloomberg, painted a somewhat gloomy future for the $3,500 headset: pricing could discourage developers from developing for it!

“The answer will lie somewhere in between. Developers may be slow to create Vision Pro apps because of the product’s high price and small user base. The device also doesn’t have the kind of hand controllers available on other headsets. On the other hand, it’s going to be relatively painless to convert current apps into visionOS fare. And that should help make the Vision Pro app store more successful than the Apple Watch and TV versions, even if it never matches the popularity of the one on iOS, “Gurman wrote.

When the device is released, there will be three app variants. One will run unmodified iPhone, iPad apps in visionOS in a window, the second variant will cover iPad apps that have undergone conversion to run natively (but will require optimization and modification by developers to improve the user experience), and the third will include native VR and AR support. Gurman says the previous $1 app prices could jump to $20, making it the new norm, with productivity-focused apps ranging from $50-200.

So after the hardware, the software won’t be cheap either.
