After his debut in Mortal Kombat 11, Geras will again be a playable character in NetherRealm Studios’ fighting game.
A short story summary about Geras: he appeared in the previous Mortal Kombat as the defendant of the hourglass of time. The Mortal Kombat 1 name is kind of idiotic (it was a dumber idea for Battlefield 1, where the first part of the franchise was called Battlefield 1942), but perhaps it’s a hint that we can expect a timeline story in the new installment. He shows up to set everything and everyone straight.
Watching the video, it seems like he’s retained his ability: he can temporarily freeze his opponent, leaving them open to an attack (or the start of a combo), and a lot of his moves are time-related, but there are also a few that are sand-related (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is small potatoes compared to what Geras is performing…). Of course, he also has a finishing move: Geras puts his opponent’s face at the head of a sandstorm and grinds the defeated character’s face to the bone.
NetherRealm Studios recently confirmed that JK Simmons will play Omni-Man in Mortal Kombat 1. The game will also feature guest appearances from Homelander (The Boys) and Peacemaker (Suicide Squad), who will be part of the Kombat Pack DLC, along with Ermac, Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, and Takeda, as it’s not often these days that a fighting game is released in its entirety without any DLC. Understandably, developers and publishers want to push for post-launch support, but it should be added that Mortal Kombat wasn’t like this 30 years ago when it was first released, and then X or Y characters weren’t added later.
Mortal Kombat 1 will hold a closed beta for pre-orderers from August 18 to 21 before being released on September 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (Denuvo…), and Nintendo Switch.
