TECH NEWS – Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger acknowledged that Nvidia has done an excellent job in this area.
Gelsinger spoke to Yahoo! Finance Live and said the PC market had left the bad times behind. In the second quarter of 2023, Intel’s balance sheet was also positive, following positive developments on both the client and data center side: “But I think the worst is behind us at this point. And our, you know, raise to the guide for Q3 portends to a more optimistic future. So super proud of my team and making an excellent quarter happen for us,” Gelsinger said.
He highlighted several products on artificial intelligence: the 5th-generation Emerald Rapids processors (to be released in the third quarter instead of the previously planned fourth quarter), Meteor Lake is coming later this year, and Gelsinger said it will be the Centrino moment for PCs. He calls the Meteor Lake PCs AI PCs because of the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem and the advances in AI (these will be added to Core Ultra processors… Ultra will be a brand reserved for premium CPUs). There’s also Gaudi2, which will be available in China (similar to the Nvidia product made just for them), and the first silicon for Gaudi 3 has already been received by Intel and will have twice the performance of Gaudi 2, with the technology planned for 2024-2025.
“You know, data center, hey, we did a little bit better than we thought we would in Q2. The product roadmap Sapphire Rapids, Gen 4, and Gen 5 with Emerald Rapids, looking to appear in Q3 a bit ahead of schedule, and the roadmap for next year. So I’ll say we’re still at the green shoots level there. And we are ushering in the AI PC with our next-generation product. We call it Meteor Lake is the name for it. You know, we have new capabilities in AI built into the product that is going to allow you just to do cool things in your PC and be able to do real-time language translation, be able to do transcription in real time, video effects, all of these type of things, new gamer models. So we see that being like the Centrino moment for bringing Wi-Fi into the PC two decades ago. We see this AI PC as ushering in a new class of applications, major application upgrades, and ISV excitements. And we’re leading the way with our Meteor Lake product in the second half of this year. So healthy and great opportunity in the future,” Gelsinger said.
Intel’s CEO admitted that Nvidia is the frontrunner in the AI market. The AI space is much younger than the data center and client markets: “Well, I’ll just say, you know, Nvidia’s done a good job in this space. And they’ve led the way. And as I like to say, they worked super hard. And they got lucky to be at the right place at the right time for some of these algorithmic breakthroughs. And the AI space is still fairly young. So I think there’s a lot of opportunity for us looking forward. We’re starting to show up, winning customers, and getting real enthusiasm because the market wants alternatives here. And so we’re hearing our customers saying, OK, how can you show up to give us good alternatives that are more cost-effective, power-efficient, capabilities that the competition doesn’t offer?” Gelsinger added.
So Intel will keep on fighting.
