Death Stranding 2: Show, Don’t Just Tell!

The next game from Kojima Productions should put more emphasis on the cutscenes.

In Death Stranding, we heard a lot of what was happening in the world, so there were many times when the Japanese studio metaphorically dropped an information bomb on us. The sequel could change that, especially with the rewritten story (we wrote about it a few days ago), if it didn’t put so much emphasis on revealing the secrets of the past and instead focused on the events that are happening and the future so that the game can show us more and not just tell us what is happening.

For example, Amelie’s long monologue on the beach could be revisited, or Sam could be moved away to give a better introduction to the Death Stranding story. We had it in the first episode when Fragile was in Timefall, showing us how powerful Higgs, the secondary villain of the game, was. Fragile’s morality was also at the heart of it: she sacrificed her body to save South Knot City, though she later regretted it. There’s also Deadman, exploring nightmares without Sam, or the backstory as seen through the eyes of Mama and Heartman. These are the kinds of themes that a sequel should investigate so that we can experience first-hand the stories of others.

There are many characters, and most have complex backstories so these recollections would sit better than a few lines of text. Perhaps the problem is that the world of Death Stranding is enormous, and the sequel’s cast is not tiny, so if everyone was treated the same way, it would take much longer to play and would be expensive to create the scenes. Therefore, a different change of perspective would help tell their story. But you could also go into the messages and diary entries. Lucy Strand, Sam’s first wife, is prominent in it (she died pregnant), so we can discover what happened to her, and there are some hints that the BB we are carrying, Lou, might be the couple’s child.

So there could be potential in Death Stranding 2, which is currently in development for PlayStation 5.
