There have been rumors that the comic book series The Last Ronin will be adapted into a game, and THQ Nordic has confirmed it.
THQ Nordic’s announcement was cut short, with only a teaser for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. Along with this brief announcement: “Who is the Last Ronin? In a future, battle-ravaged New York City, a lone surviving Turtle embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost. From the minds of the creators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and based on the best-selling comic book event by Eastman, Waltz, Bishop, Delgado, and the Escorza Brothers: the official video game adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.”
Black Forest Games is developing the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. The studio has previously developed Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, the console ports of Titan Quest (the sequel to which will be in the news later today), Fade to Silence, and the remake of two episodes of Destroy All Humans!
To quote ourselves from the end of March: ” In 2020, the five-part Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin was released, and Doug Rosen, Senior Vice President of Games and Emerging Media at Paramount Global, confirmed that a third-person action-RPG genre game adaptation is in the works but did not specify which studio was tasked with the job. Rosen told Polygon that a darker, more adult concept is being given to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, known in its home country as Teenage Ninja Turtles, which will hereafter be abbreviated as TMNT.
Rosen has compared the concept to the 2018 God of War and its sequel last year, God of War: Ragnarok. The game’s story remains faithful to the storyline of The Last Ronin; it’s set in the future, where only one of the four warrior turtles survives. However, this warrior will also wield the iconic weapon of his three brothers. According to the comics, it’s Michelangelo (but he dies in the story… we know, we’re spoiling, but it’s relevant information for the game).
Rosen added that there would be mainly one character (Michelangelo) to play, with flashback scenes (the last issue of the comic itself ends with one) allowing you to take control of others. Don’t expect the game this year, though, as Rosen says they’re still a few years away from release, but he believes they’ve found the right partner to make a punchy AAA game.”
So with Rosen’s comment considered, an action RPG is in the works at Black Forest Games for current-gen platforms. Release date unknown.
