Is Santa Monica Studio Working On God Of War: Ragnarök’s Sequel?

Sony’s Santa Monica Studio has likely already been given an order from Sony Interactive Entertainment president CEO Jim Ryan to make a sequel, as blockbusters are a big part of the “blue team”…

God of War was released for PlayStation 4 in 2018, followed by God of War: Ragnarök last year for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 (although it was first announced as a PS5 exclusive, and Ryan said it was time to leave the PS4 behind…), and the story of Kratos and Atreus was an instant success. The year before last, there were rumors from one of Sony’s in-house, first-party studios that an unannounced project was in the works at Santa Monica Studio alongside God of War. Since then, we have not heard anything official about the new project.

But the team does have a job posting. Santa Monica Studio seeks a combat designer for a new, unannounced title. While that term in itself means almost nothing, the job posting expects the successful candidate to know the 2018 and 2022 God of War and the ability to talk deeply about combat systems, mechanics, and enemies.

The job announcement doesn’t automatically mean that Santa Monica Studio has started work on a third God of War game, but we know the Sony mentality. Likely, studios often focus on one IP at a time, as Naughty Dog has done recently with The Last of Us, as they made a third version of the first part after The Last of Us Part II (in less than ten years, that sounds ridiculous…), and now they’re working on their multiplayer project, which we’ll refer to as The Last of Us: Factions for lack of an official name.

It’s unofficial that Santa Monica Studio is working on a new God of War sequel, but given how much money that IP has made Sony, we’re probably right to suspect it…
