Was Another DC Movie Project Axed By Warner Bros.?!

MOVIE NEWS – A much-anticipated solo film for a Batman character is apparently not going ahead at Warner Bros – the latest DC project to be cancelled.

The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay’s Nightwing movie has received a disappointing update that DC fans have come to expect. Warner Bros. has always struggled to get its DC films out of development. The Flash was first announced in 2014, and Black Adam in 2007. These films have also only recently been released in cinemas. In addition, the Warner Bros. merger with Discovery has shaken up all the projects in development.

Further changes were brought about when James Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-CEOs of DC Studios and decided to reboot the DCEU in the upcoming DCU.

The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez recently confirmed that the Nightwing movie is among the cancelled DC projects. Gonzalez was responding to a post on Home of DCU in which he wrote: “I hope Chris McKay can still work on his Nightwing movie”. Gonzalez didn’t mince words in his response when he said “This project is dead”. McKay directed The LEGO Batman Movie and signed on to direct a live-action Nightwing movie for the DCEU in 2017. The film was to be linked to Ben Affleck’s Batman movie. But it was changed to possibly be a solo film with little connection to the rest of the DCEU.

In June 2021, Mckay said Nightwing was still stuck in development hell at Warner Bros. He also gave the film a glimmer of hope when DC announced that they would be releasing films like Batgirl and Blue Beetle on HBO Max. He hoped this would give him a chance to make the film. However, despite being made, Batgirl was never released. And Blue Beetle made a disappointing box office debut.

When Gunn was appointed head of DC Studios, he had a concrete plan for the company’s future. Fans were disappointed that Nightwing was cut.

His character had already been popular for some time, and his popularity was boosted by his well-received solo comic book series, as well as his appearances in other mediums such as Gotham Knights, Titans and Harley Quinn.

Unfortunately, Mckay’s Nightwing film will not be made. But hopefully, fans can see Nightwing on the big screen in the DCU and possibly The Brave and The Bold.
