Can you try Starfield on Xbox One? Can you really roam massive planets? Here’s everything gamers need to know.
As Bethesda prepares to unveil a new intellectual product for the first time in more than 25 years, old-school fans are scrambling for information on Starfield’s release on previous-gen consoles. Starfield, as the highly anticipated Microsoft-exclusive game, has been confirmed to arrive this September on Xbox Series X/S consoles and Windows 10 and 11 PCs.
However, the game’s demanding requirements have led to concerns among some fans about Starfield’s compatibility with Xbox One.
The news is both good news and bad news: there is no official Xbox One release on the horizon. However, there is a simple and legitimate solution that will allow gamers to experience it on their Xbox One console.
Can Starfield be played on Xbox One?
Starfield is available on Xbox One through Game Pass Ultimate Cloud Gaming. To play Bethesda’s highly anticipated RPG, Xbox One owners will need to sign up for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and stream the game through Microsoft’s cloud service at launch.
Players’ internet connection will affect the Starfield gaming experience on Xbox One. However, the game’s fixed 30fps frame rate should help ensure smooth performance on the previous-generation Xbox console.
Technically, the Xbox One specifications are incompatible with Starfield’s requirements – especially considering that Starfield requires an SSD to run.
But Xbox Cloud Gaming allows this previous-generation console to run Bethesda’s most ambitious game without significant performance issues.
Note that Starfield will not receive an official Xbox One release. The game will only be released for the new generation consoles (Series X and S) and Windows 10 or 11 PCs.
How explorable are the planets?
According to preliminary information from the developers, Starfield will have fully explorable planets. According to Todd Howard, players will have complete freedom to explore the game’s entire galaxy.
Of course, leaks of gameplay have led to conflicting speculation. Leakers have claimed to have found invisible walls at the far ends of planets. However, based on the official announcements and information from Starfield Direct, players will likely be able to travel to all parts of a planet if they have the right equipment or skills.
Because the game’s planets are procedurally generated, players will not be able to ride horses or operate vehicles on them.
So, planetary exploration in Starfield will be based on walking, scanning and discovering new objects or points of interest. It is also assumed that players will not be able to land on a planet manually. Instead, they will start exploring after selecting a specific landing point.
Despite the developers’ emphasis on the game’s galactic freedom, exploration of Starfield will likely be limited in some ways. Todd Howard hinted at this during the August Direct.
Several gameplay elements could limit players’ planetary exploration. One of these is oxygen consumption. Environmental hazards can also be problematic. The mechanics of thirst and hunger are also built into the game. The planets will probably function like regions in Elder Scrolls games, with their own explorable locations and dungeons.
