Michael Unsworth, VP of writing at Rockstar Games, announced on LinkedIn that he is leaving the company and the development of Grand Theft Auto VI. The veteran worked at Rockstar for 16 years and contributed greatly to the success of the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series. The announcement raises the question of how this will affect the development of Grand Theft Auto VI.
It’s rare in the video game industry that things happen that cause a lot of backlash, but Rockstar Games VP of Writing Michael Unsworth’s announcement on LinkedIn that he’s leaving is certainly one – including Grand Theft Auto VI. Unsworth worked for the company for more than 16 years and played a key role in the development of the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises.
On his LinkedIn profile, Unsworth introduces himself as follows: “Mike is an experienced writer with over 16 years at Rockstar Games. He has served as creative director on some of the industry’s most critically acclaimed and commercially successful franchises. He is highly skilled in interactive storytelling, in character development and open-world game design, and has versatile experience in managing creative teams.”
The announcement of the departure caused a huge uproar among fans, who fear that the already delayed Grand Theft Auto 6 will be further delayed. Others, however, are cautiously optimistic, noting that Unsworth’s departure is not necessarily a disaster, as there are many talented creators working on the project anyway.
GTA VI’s release date is still slated for 2025. If there are any changes in this regard, we will of course be among the first to notify everyone. Until then, there’s no reason to panic.
