Without giving any concrete details, Last of Us 2 director Neil Druckmann hinted at the new game in a recent interview.

 

 

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Last of Us 2 director and Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann hinted at plans for a sequel to the popular series. The game developer’s president has certainly been busy lately. As well as working on a new season of the HBO series, he is now running his studio on his own. Since the Naughty Dog co-chairman announced his departure from the company, Druckmann has clearly been busy.

Just last year, Druckmann and Naughty Dog brought the original Last of Us to PS5. The updated game was a big hit with fans and quickly earned a place in the top single-player PS5 games.

Its release, coupled with the success of the HBO series, has sparked renewed interest in the franchise, with many gamers eager to see when a new instalment will be released.

While no official announcement has been made yet, a Last of Us 3 seems inevitable.

Speaking to EW, Druckmann hinted at a new game in the pipeline when asked about a sequel to Last of Us 2. When the subject was broached, he claimed that he “can’t say anything” and jokingly added that “my comms director over there will slaughter me.” While this is not confirmation, Druckmann’s sly evasion of the issue and the fact that he could get in trouble for providing more information can be taken as evidence that a new game is indeed in the works.

It seems likely that if no new game was currently planned, Druckmann would have simply said so. If he could get in trouble for saying anything, then there is obviously something to talk about. This isn’t the first time Druckmann has hinted at Last of Us 3, by the way. It seems to be an ongoing pattern. Naughty Dog’s president maintains interest in an upcoming reveal. If that’s the case, it could affect a lot of fans.

Some say that Uncharted is the backbone of Naughty Dog, not Last of Us, but there’s no doubt that the latter series is a big part of the developer’s success.

Presumably, it is inevitable that players will eventually get a follow-up. It is more a matter of time. The hints we have received from Druckmann only support this idea. Last of Us 3 is already planned, if not currently in development. There may not be anything definitive yet. But fans should keep an eye out for more news in the near future. In the meantime, gamers can replay the first two games and look forward to the second season of The Last of Us on HBO.
