The Daily Wire has responded to calls against Snow White. The conservative media company has released a teaser for a live-action version of the Brothers Grimm tale. It’s called Snow White and the Evil Queen. This comes after months of controversy surrounding Walt Disney Studios’ upcoming live-action film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Critics say the remake is too far removed from the original story.
Snow White and the Evil Queen will be the first full-length production for Daily Wire’s recently launched children’s entertainment platform Bentkey.
Actress-turned-conservative political commentator and YouTuber Brett Cooper will lead the film. It’s scheduled to hit cinemas in 2024, like the Disney movie. Before launching his Daily Wire series, The Comments Section, in 2022, Cooper starred in Paramount Network’s short-lived 2018 series Heathers. He also had minor roles in various series and films. There is no word yet on who will play his film counterpart.
According to Deadline, Daily Wire co-founder Jeremy Boreing announced the upcoming film.
“It’s a story about a princess and a prince, about beauty and vanity, about love and its power to raise us from death to life. It’s our own adaptation of an ancient fairy tale.”
Cooper shared his excitement about starring in the upcoming film:
“I was raised on the original Grimms’ Fairy Tales, so I’m thrilled that we’re bringing this iconic story to life for the next generation. Snow White is such a beautiful character, and I’m honored to be playing her. Like all the best fairy tales, this is a story with timeless values, like love, friendship, and kindness, and I can’t wait to share them.”
Bentkey, which offers 18 different children’s shows, is now available on desktop, iOS, Android, AppleTV, Roku and FireTV. Snow White and the Wicked Queen is scheduled to premiere in 2024.
Daily Wire co-founder outraged by Disney’s upcoming Snow White
Boreing used the unveiling of Snow White and the Evil Queen to talk about another upcoming live-action Snow White movie:
“Instead of telling stories about timeless truth, what the ancient fairy tales were all about, Disney’s new ‘Snow White’ is an apology for their past and will expose children to the popular but destructive lies of the current moment,” he said.
Boreing is among the many who have railed against the upcoming film. Zegler’s remarks that the original 1937 film was “extremely outdated when it comes to ideas about women in positions of power” were not well received by critics. The West Side Story actress also said that the film was not so much a love story as it was about Snow White’s “inner journey that she goes through to find her true self”. These comments, along with the fact that a Latina actress was cast in the lead role and the seven dwarves were replaced by people of different races, sizes and genders, led some to brand the film “woke”.
