Barbarian Is Getting A Game Adaptation!

The horror movie written and directed by Zach Cregger, which debuted in theaters last fall, is now getting a video game adaptation (which is a bit interesting, because usually they are released next to or near the movies, not long after…).

Variety reports that New Regency Entertainment and Diversion3 Entertainment have agreed to “gamify” Cregger’s highly successful debut (which is a success, as it grossed ten times its budget… so it’s a blockbuster!). The movie starred Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long, and the story goes that the main character, Tess, goes to a rented house the night before her job interview, but when she gets there, she finds that someone else has already rented it. A local event causes empty rooms to fill up almost everywhere, but Tess stays, unaware that the house has a dark secret.

Diversion3 Entertainment has previously worked on two asymmetrical survival horror games, Saber Interactive’s Evil Dead: The Game and IllFonic’s Friday the 13th: The Game, and based on that we can guess what style and genre we can expect in the Barbarian adaptation, which we can expect to see on PC and consoles (presumably PlayStation 5, Xbox series, PC… and maybe Nintendo Switch 2, who knows?).

“We are thrilled to be working with the team at New Regency to expand on the settings, characters and creatures of Barbarian. The movie did a great job of not only terrifying audiences with its unexpected and terrifying twists and turns, but also establishing strong characters in terrifying situations. We look forward to exploring these themes further in the game,” said Tim Hesse, executive producer of Diversion3 Entertainment, in the press release. “Expanding the ‘Barbarian’ universe into a game offers a new way to capture the horror that made the movie such a success. We’re thrilled to be working with the incredibly talented team at Diversion3 Entertainment to immerse new and existing fans in this world,” added Yariv Milchan, Chairman and CEO of New Regency Pictures.

Even the release window is unknown at this time.
