According to publisher Warner, it’s not a Live Service game, but don’t take their word for it.
In November, a job ad appeared on the Warner Bros. website suggesting that the Wonder Woman game might have live service elements, and then Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav told investors that the games division was focused on turning its biggest franchises into live service titles (we wrote about this), which would allow players to spend more time and money on them, leading to monetisation and longer player retention.
This comes after a Warner spokesperson denied to IGN that it was a live service game: “Wonder Woman is a single-player action-adventure game set in a dynamic open world. This third-person experience will allow players to become Diana of Themyscira and introduce an original story set in the DC Universe, including the Nemesis system. Wonder Woman is not designed as a “live service”.
We will believe that when the game is released and there is no monetisation. Announced at The Game Awards 2021, the game is being developed by Monolith Productions (Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War), so it’s no coincidence that they mention the Nemesis System so you can “build deeper relationships with both your enemies and allies as you transform from a heroic warrior into a proven leader”. Diana must also unite her human friends and the Amazon family against a new, mysterious threat.
Since Middle-Earth: Shadow of War was released in 2017, perhaps it’s time for Warner to showcase the game properly, so we could see Wonder Woman at this year’s The Game Awards in early December. Meanwhile, another Warner studio, Rocksteady, is developing Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but this one will indeed have live service elements (battle pass, at least four seasons, free villains, environments, weapons and events after release).
