A hidden graphics preset called Unobtainium will bring even Nvidia’s top-of-the-line graphics card to its knees at 4K resolution.
You can access this graphics preset by typing -unlockmaxsettings in the Add Launch Arguments menu of the Ubisoft Connect client. This will give you the settings before the Ultra preset. For example, you will see better raytracing and higher resolution for shadows and reflections. However, the bar is set so high that even on an RTX 4090 it barely runs over 60 FPS at 4K resolution with DLSS set to performance mode (and it upscales from 1080p!) Here’s an image comparison between the Ultra and Unobtainium presets, but you can also watch a video of it below.
Meanwhile, don’t forget that Ubisoft’s game also supports AMD’s new FSR 3 Frame Generation technology. The latest Radeon RX 7000 cards deliver over 100 FPS at all resolutions, and the 7900 XTX runs Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora at nearly 150 FPS at 4K. So the RDNA 3 GPUs perform well. On an RX 7600 with Ultra preset and ray tracing, AMD recommends 1080p resolution, quality mode and frame gen (average FPS: 109), on the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT you can now push it up to 1440p (average FPS: 115 and 131 respectively). The RX 7900 XT and XTX can now be set to 4K and run in FSR performance mode (average FPS: 136 and 148 respectively). AMD has published the benchmarks on its blog.
Computerbase and PCGameshardware also published their tests, and they included Nvidia’s graphics cards in the test. (Obviously, they didn’t use Unobtainium, but the Ultra preset, which is understandable… with the secret settings, Ubisoft wants to be a kind of modern Crysis). It’s safe to say that Massive Entertainment has brought a forward-looking game to the table in terms of visuals.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC and Amazon Luna.
