By the studio’s own admission, there is not enough support for virtual reality in the gaming industry, and they are paying the price…
First Contact Entertainment, the studio behind Firewall and Solaris Offworld Combat, has announced on Facebook that they are closing their doors after nearly eight years in business, despite having recently released a new game. Firewall Ultra was released for PlayStation VR2 on August 24th, and Solaris: Offworld Combat II was also in development. What this tells us is that Sony may not be unwilling to tell us how PlayStation VR2 sales are going on a regular basis… as with PlayStation Plus, they are not living up to the standards they have set for themselves!
Let’s take a look at the announcement from First Contact Entertainment: “After nearly 8 years of working with the most amazing team I’ve ever had the pleasure to be a part of, I’m sad to announce that we will be closing our company, First Contact Entertainment, at the end of the year. The lack of support for virtual reality in the industry has finally taken its toll. As a AAA virtual reality game developer, we are simply unable to justify the effort required to move forward. We are a team of fearless innovators who are willing to push new technologies to their limits. I am extremely proud of the team and grateful to our investors, our partners and of course our community of dedicated and passionate players. It’s been a wild ride. Thank you!”
With the studio recently working on PlayStation VR2, Sony is also behind the closure. We’ve seen PlayStation 5 commercials on TV, but not a single PlayStation VR2 commercial, or if they did, they were aired at a very obscure time. The PlayStation 5 has already sold over 50 million units despite a stock shortage due to a pandemic, while the virtual reality headset will not even reach that number in its lifetime, and we are not writing that as a criticism.
So we thank First Contact Entertainment for their work, and we’re sorry it led to a game over.
