Can it Get Any Lower?! Starfield’s Steam Rating Just Got Worse!

Continued dissatisfaction with Starfield has seen the game’s Steam rating drop further, but a recent change could paint an even more worrying picture for the game.

Starfield no longer receives a ‘Mixed’ rating on Steam, as the majority of reviews recently left by players are ‘Mostly Negative’, with only 37% satisfied with the game. Although Starfield launched successfully in September 2023, the latest Bethesda title has slowly lost popularity. After Skyrim and Fallout 4, many Bethesda fans were disappointed with Starfield.

While Bethesda should be commended for trying to create something different, it seems that the majority of gamers are unhappy with the direction they have taken. Starfield’s sole focus on procedural generation has resulted in it lacking the ‘magic’ that originally attracted fans to Bethesda games, with some players claiming that it feels more like an amusement park of empty worlds and static cities connected by loading screens rather than the immersive sandbox experience that previous Bethesda titles so effortlessly conveyed.

Though the biggest RPGs of 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield present two opposite extremes in the troubling trend for RPGs.
As a result, Starfield currently boasts a 37% rating on Steam, based on user reviews from players over the past 30 days. While Bethesda has shared an ambitious roadmap for Starfield, it has done little to improve the current public perception of the game. The resurgence of Cyberpunk 2077, along with the colossal success of Baldur’s Gate 3, is probably the worst thing that could have happened to Starfield. Numerous disgruntled players have compared it to the other two titles, which has only further highlighted Starfield’s biggest shortcomings as a role-playing game.

Although Emil Pagliarulo responded to Starfield’s critics on Twitter, claiming that the game required a lot of hard work and accusing disgruntled players of being out of touch with the reality of game development, the statement only deepened the rift between Bethesda and the community.

With Skyrim having more players than Starfield, it’s clear that the game doesn’t have the traction that Bethesda was hoping for. But that doesn’t mean it will always be the case. Bethesda hasn’t let Starfield down yet, with around 250 employees still working on the game and regular updates due to be released in 2024.
