Although the PlayStation 3 was released 17 years ago (it was very expensive at the time and technologically revolutionary because of the Cell processor…), leaked documents from the Insomniac Games ransomware attack reveal that the number of active users is still in the seven figures…
PlayStation LifeStyle has reported on the user base of the PlayStation 3, which has received two smaller models in its lifetime (and in the meantime, the PS3’s success has started to take off, as it’s had a bumpy start to say the least). From Uncharted to The Last of Us, several IPs have been released on the console, and even though the PlayStation 4 has been out for over a decade, there are still games that were only released on the PS3 that fans would welcome a new port (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots being just one example).
As a testament to the success of the PlayStation 3, internal figures from Insomniac Games show that between December 2022 and February 2023, the console will have between 1.9 and 2.3 million monthly active users! This is probably because many PS3 titles are not available on modern platforms (like MGS4…) and many others can only be played via PlayStation Plus Premium from the cloud, as there is still no local PS3 emulation, which a PlayStation 5 should be able to do.
PlayStation Network users on PlayStation 4 totaled 71.5 million in the same period, while PlayStation 5 had 37.1 million by February, according to the leak. The latter result is particularly good, as the first two years of the PlayStation 5 were hard to get due to stock shortages. However, it’s amazing how many people were still playing PlayStation 3 in February this year, even though it’s not easy to find a new one (and it’s easy to find a used one).
Sony should think about why that is. Maybe not everyone made this decision for financial reasons.
