The Bikeriders: a Biker Gang is Riding for the Oscars [VIDEO]

MOVIE NEWS – Oscar nominee Austin Butler (Elvis) stars in the crime drama The Bikeriders, which is being touted as an Oscar contender. It won’t get a statuette this year, but it will next year, because the actors’ strike has now pushed its release into the summer.

The movie tells the story of a Midwestern motorcycle gang that starts out as a recreational club for young, out-of-touch rural youths and over the years becomes a dangerous criminal syndicate.

Butler is joined by fellow Oscar nominee Tom Hardy (The Return) in the film, which is directed by two-time Cannes Palme d’Or nominee Jeff Nichols (Loving, Mud).

That The Bikeriders is an Oscar contender is suggested not by the rankings, but by the critics. According to Variety, the film is the godfather of biker cinema, meaning that just as Coppola’s classic analyzed the nature of the Mafia from a socio-psychological and all other perspectives, Nichols restores the typically American myth of tough guys on two wheels, finally showing the man under the steel helmet.
